Hometown:  San Antonio TX

Unit at Loring:  42 Services Sq

First day at Loring:

Dec 7, Pearl Harbor Day, arrived late after driving from Phila, Pa.  Didn't know anyone lived that far north of Boston.  Drove through the Haynesville Woods back when I-95 was 2 lanes except at major crossroads, then it was 4 lanes.  Drove the longest 60 miles in the world, Houlton to Caribou. Spent the night in billeting before reporting to my unit the following morning.  The guy who signed me in, Joey Ventiluth, became my best friend and was best man at my wedding in Oct 68 to Ina Cox of Caribou.  We've been married more than 41 years now, with 2 grown daughters who have only wonderful memories of Caribou and their grandparents, Jim and Lorraine Cox.  Many of you may know then as Mr. and Mrs. Claus in the area.

Most memorable experience:

In Jan 68, Joey and I went into Caribou to meet up with his girlfriend, Margaret Manship.  Margaret worked in a bridal shop and while there, my future wife came in.  She was home from school in Portland.  A few nights later we were at a party on the base and I "rescued" her from a dude trying to get her drunk.  She and I talked until 3 am and began dating.  We were married at Holy Rosary Catholic Church 9 months after we met and have been together now more than 41 years.

Last Day at Loring:

I left my wife and newborn daughter in their new quarters at Presque Isle while I served a short tour in Galena AK.  Tough leaving because my duaghter, Traci, was only 6 weeks old...Ina was only 19.

What did you do after Loring?

Reenlisted at Loring for the 1st time -- served for 30 yrs and retired as Chief, AF Enlisted PME at Randolph AFB, TX in 1995.  Have been teaching public school since and will retire again in Jun 2011.  Still married to Ina (from Caribou) with 2 grown, married daughters and 5 wonderful grand babies, ages 12 to 2.
