Hometown:  Waterville, Maine

Unit at Loring:  42 SPS

First day at Loring:

I arrived at Loring in Mid September.  The weather was fantastic.  I reported at the West Gate and was taken to the squadoron orderly room.  I spent the day processing in and was assigned to my flight.

Most memorable experience:

In October of 1973 I was working at the Bomber entry control point (EC A-1).

The klaxon went off and the alert crews fired up the buffs.  I thought they were going to shut down.  But the damn things began to taxi to the south end of the runway.  The bombers arrived at the head of the runway and began to throttle up their engines.  I thought they were going to fly.  Eventually they shut down and remained on alert status where they sat.  Of course that was during the Yom Kippur War of 1973.  President Nixon and Henry Kissinger wanted to send the Soviets a message.

Last Day at Loring:

Rather sad.  Leaving friends and an area I had come to love.  Loring may have been called "Boring Loring" but it was anything but that for me.
