Hometown:  Fresno, CA (now San Diego, CA)

Unit at Loring:  42nd AMS

First day at Loring:  Bussed in from Presque Isle airport on an old blue Air Force bus- I was the only one on the bus.  Went through admin processing and was picked up by Airman First Class Dale Gliptis, who turned out to be my best friend at Loring.  Dale made me feel at home, and took me to the barracks where I got my own room (for a little while, anyway).

Most memorable experience:   To many to tell, but I won the base talent show one year I was there (held at the Whispering Pines rec center), and I got a huge trophy. I played guitar and sang in a band I put together, and we played Neil Young's "Down by the River" and "Southern Man."  It was awesome.

Last Day at Loring:   I stayed with Dale and his wife Linda off base my last night - fun night listening to music and having a few beers.  I was excited to get out of there, truthfully, but sad to say goodbye to my friends.  I was up early and packed up my VW bus and headed for California.  I've never been back, but I have kept in touch with Dale and Linda over the years, and they came out to San Diego in 1998 to visit.

What did you do after Loring: A lot.  Played music in a number of rock bands, worked in the aviation and television industries as an electronics technician.  Finally got a college degree (BA in music composition from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD)), and then a law degree (JD).  I've been an intellectual property attorney, mainly practicing in the area of trademark and copyright law, for the past 10 years in San Diego.  Married to Valerie Staples, and we live on a small ranch in the mountains east of San Diego.
