Home Town: Pittsfield,MA
Unit at Loring: 42 Transportation Sq.
First Day at Loring: I was somewhat bewildered by just how immense the base was and exactly how far it was from "civilization". I was also terribly impressed however. It took me about a week to be able to sleep through the night because the BUFFs made so much noise landing and taking off, our barracks was toward the end of the runway.
Most Memorable Experience: The time that I hit the Wing Commander, Col. Ruger W. Winchester squarely in the chest with a paint roller full of white paint. We were preparing for a CAFI inspection and he stopped by to check things out. I thought for sure I'd be court-martialed but, he just said "carry on men, keep up the good work." My first sergeant looked like he was going to have a heart attack.
Last Day at Loring: While I was looking forward to being stationed in the Pacific instead of northern Maine, it was a bittersweet experince to leave behind the close friends I had made. As the years have passed, I've always cherished the memories of the time I spent at Loring.
What did you do after Loring? I was stationed at CCK AB, Taiwan and at McGuire AFB, NJ . After separation, I became an over the road bus driver for 32 years, retiring in 2008.
