Hometown:  Thomasville, Ga

Unit at Loring:  42 CSG/Headquarters Sq

First day at Loring:

Checked into the VOQ, went for dinner, watched TV, then crashed for the night, only to be awakened by my wake-up call the next morning. Most of us expect a wake-up call via phone; I failed to notice there wasn't one in my room. The wake-up call came from a speaker system high on the wall, so I'm snoozing away only to hear a loud voice from on high telling me it's time to get up. Startled the dickens out of me! After I got my heart restarted, I realized what it was, but I didn't leave any more wake-up calls - bought an alarm clock!

Most memorable experience:

There are way too many to count, but most involved the escapades my first shirt (Stan Klein) and I got into. I've been blessed to have him as my best friend ever since.

Last Day at Loring:

Colder than a cob. Dec. 27, 1980 - leaving for Wurtsmith the next day. So cold I had to take my battery out and bring it into the VOQ room. The tough thing was reinstalling in the next morning at double-00 dark at -30 degrees. And no, I didn't leave a wake-up call! I actually hated the leave - Loring was the best assignment I had.

What did you do after Loring:

Did a tour at Wurtsmith (40 Air Div), then off to SAC Hq for 10 years as the SAC audioviaual manager. Retired in 93 (thanks Bill & Hillary - sarcasm definitely intended), worked in health care administration for several years, then switched to financial planning, which I'm still doing in my own business in Bellevue, NE.
