Home Town: Peabody, MA
Unit at Loring: 42nd CES
First Day at Loring: I came in very late on the evening of my reporting date because I'd been caught driving through a blizzard all the way from Massachusetts. Maine proved to be a LOT bigger than I had thought at the time.
Most Memorable Experience: After the Vern burned incident, it might be the time when the fire department had a softball game, and the pitcher did not show up. I was pulled out of the stands, half-hammered on cheap rum, and pitched a slow-pitch shut out.
Last Day at Loring: Depressing, and hysterical. I had to take a bus to Presque Isle airport, passing the one-year-old car I had totalled only a week before, which was still sitting at the (West Gate Amoco?) gas station (Run by a pirate known as Vern "the Burn"). A high speed test ride went bad, and I ended up bouncing my Chevy Malibu off a house, then backwards into a tree in Limestone. The only good thing was the fact that another 42nd fireman had totalled his car a couple of nights after mine, and the aforementioned Vern had reached in to shut off the ignition before hooked up to it. BOOM! He was sitting in a chair in front of the gas station, arms wrapped up like the mummy, and no eye brows. I laughed the rest of the way to the airport.
What did you do after Loring? Went back to school, got a degree in communications, and got into commercial video production for many years. Later after marriage and children urged a life change, I earned an MEd, and have been a high school teacher since.
