Hometown: East Greenbush, NY

Unit at Loring: 42 SPS

First day at LoringI arrived in mid May and there were still huge piles of snow on the ground.  I was used to snow, being from Upstate NY.  But this was May!  My first day on the base, I got stopped at the main gate for a random vehicle inspection.

Most memorable experience:

Last Day at Loring: My last day was in April 1974.  I enjoyed my time at Loring, but was glad to leave.  I've worked with several others in the ANG who also served at Loring.

What did you do after Loring: I was a Palace Chase transfer to the Air National Guard, joining the 109 AW at Stratton ANGB, Scotia, NY.  I did 18 years as a Guardsman with the 109 SPS.  I was a Police Officer with the East Greenbush, NY PD, retiring as a Detective in 1992.  I then went to Operations as fulltime Admin/Personnel, was selected as First Sgt for the 139 AS and finally Superintendent of the Command Post.  I'll be retiring from that position at the end of March 2012.  The 109 AW flies Ski equipped LC-130s in Greenland and Antarctica.  I've made 15 or 16 trips to Greenland and about the same to New Zealand and Antarctica.  I've been to the South Pole twice.  I couldn't wait to get away from the bitter cold of Loring and ended up enjoying much colder temperatures and much harsher conditions in Antarctica.
